Pastor Mike Todd of Transformation Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma has gone viral and made worldwide news for the gross display he carried out during one of his sermons. The megachurch pastor typically uses over-the-top physical illustrations of certain points within scriptures to drive his point home. He admitted in his subsequent apology that the point is to essentially grab people with outlandish acts. One of his past “illustrations” was the simulation of himself walking on water. That one was very tame compared to what he did with his brother this past Sunday during service.
Mike Todd wanted to illustrate the story explained briefly in Mark 8:23. According to the New International Version of The Bible (NIV), the scripture in question reads as follows: “He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?””
There is a small debate over what exactly this scripture is referring to. That doesn’t necessarily matter in the case of Mike Todd. His interpretation of that scripture is that after Jesus spit on a blind man’s eyes, the blind man was able to see. So, of course, Mike Todd grabs his brother from backstage and proceeds to spit into his hand, then rub his spit onto his face. The series of events didn’t quite happen rapidly as one may think by reading that. Todd was preaching a sermon in between a couple of spit takes and then the final application to his brother’s face. It took all of two minutes.
