Several NYC migrant families refused to move into a Brooklyn shelter due to the unfavorable location and conditions. The shelter is composed of a series of tents built on the site of Floyd Bennett Field, which is a former airfield owned by the Federal Government. New York City migrant and asylum seeker advocates say that the area is a “transit desert”, meaning it is far away from city buses and the subway system. The facility has bathrooms but they are all outside of the shelter’s living quarters. There are also concerns about the potential for flooding. The migrants who refused the shelter that NYC Mayor Eric Adams called “less than favorable conditions” may wind up back at the world-famous Roosevelt Hotel, which has now become a run-down migrant camp. News reports say that other families may simply have nowhere to go… at least officially.
