California officials have approved “toilet to tap” regulations, allowing water companies to serve repurposed wastewater at the tap. Water from drains and toilets in homes is normally sent to treatment facilities where it is used for non-potable functions such as parks. The remainder of this water is flushed out into the ocean and/or bays. Officials say that this water is 98% clean and if sent through a few more (expensive) processes, it becomes potable. Environmentalists say this plan is sustainable in the face of climate change where drought may impact the availability of clean drinking water. Critics of the plan doubt the efficacy of the “cleaning” process.
