Twitch streamer and political commentator Hasan Piker, known online as HasanAbi, returned from a March 2026 aid mission to Cuba and stunned viewers during a CNN appearance by openly expressing sadness over the island’s visible poverty and deteriorating conditions.
Piker joined a left-wing solidarity convoy—reportedly part of the “Nuestra América Convoy”—to deliver humanitarian supplies amid Cuba’s ongoing energy crisis and fuel shortages. While on the ground, the group toured Havana and surrounding areas as the country grappled with prolonged blackouts.
In his interview on CNN’s The Story Is with Elex Michaelson, which aired March 31, 2026, Piker described his initial impressions: “When I first landed in Cuba, I was taken back by how beautiful everything was… But very quickly thereafter… everything’s pitch black. There aren’t any traffic lights on. I couldn’t believe the sights that I was seeing. It was very sad. You had homes that looked like they were bombed out.”
He continued, “I was very sad by all the poverty that I saw and then I was very angry.” Piker attributed the hardship primarily to the long-standing U.S. embargo, claiming it has “robbed” Cuba of its ability to develop. He referenced former Obama administration official Ben Rhodes, who reportedly told him the same during the trip.
The remarks quickly went viral, sparking fierce online debate. Critics accused Piker of “poverty tourism,” pointing out that the delegation stayed in a five-star hotel equipped with generators while ordinary Cubans faced 20-hour blackouts and empty shelves. Others mocked the self-described Marxist for appearing surprised by conditions under a socialist system he has long defended.
Piker has since reacted to the clip on his own platforms, reaffirming his commitment to ending the embargo and insisting the trip strengthened his views on U.S. policy toward Cuba.
The episode has reignited broader discussions about ideological tourism, the effectiveness of U.S. sanctions, and whether high-profile visitors truly grasp the realities faced by everyday citizens in the countries they visit.
