Helicopter Pilots Blocked From Rescuing Hurricane Helene Victims In Western North Carolina

A civilian helicopter pilot was threatened with arrest in Western North Carolina while attempting to rescue people trapped by Hurricane Helene. The pilot in question responded to endless requests from people stuck in remote, mountainous areas who requested private aviation to come save them. Most, if not all, of these people have no possible way out of their homes to gather any resources aside from being rescued by a helicopter. Dozens, maybe hundreds, of private civilian pilots responded to such calls from the people. However, in some locations, local officials do not welcome these pilots. At least one pilot was threatened with arrest during the rescue of an elderly couple. Not much of an excuse for the arrest threat was given outside of the pilot “interfering” with the officials’ operation.
