President Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle Obama, has finally revealed the reason why she did not attend President Trump’s inauguration or President Jimmy Carter’s funeral. She made the not-so-stunning revelation on an episode of her podcast, alongside her brother Craig and Hollywood actress Taraji P. Henson. There was quite a bit of backlash against the former First Lady after Barack Obama attended both aforementioned events by himself. It was especially embarrassing for Barack to walk in to the inauguration alone, looking somewhat irritated. All of the other former Presidents were there with their wives, even though most of them would have liked to have been anywhere else other than there.
Many online defenders of Michelle Obama try to excuse her absence by saying that President Trump and his wife Melania did not attend Joe Biden’s inauguration. The problem with that comparison is that Michelle was not the President, Barack was. And Barack is the leader as the husband. If he stays home, then she should stay home. If he goes, then she should go. For Michelle to refuse to attend events like a Presidential inauguration with her President husband is unheard of. It is so serious that rumors of their divorce began to swirl.
Michelle Obama denied the rumors of a pending divorce between her and Barack. She said the reason why she did not attend is for self-serving reasons. She stated she wanted to “own her life” and make choices that were best for her instead of “doing the right thing.” She said it was very difficult to make that decision, so she took certain steps to psych herself out of it, such as refusing to pack appropriate clothing. Actress Taraji P. Henson said that Michelle attending these events would make her be a “shock absorber”, meaning that she would do things for other people and not herself. Michelle agreed.
