New York City Mayor Eric Adams appears to have stuck his foot in his mouth with his recent comment about migrants being great “swimmers.” Adams made the statement during a talk about the inability of migrants to work due to legal restrictions. He spoke about the open jobs in the city that are desperate to be filled, one of which is apparently lifeguarding. Without giving an explanation, he stated that migrants are great swimmers and they can be put to use as lifeguards. This may or may not have been an intentionally offensive remark from Adams, but it undoubtedly rings a dog whistle and triggers some people. Mexican migrants are often called a slur that refers to them swimming across the Rio Grande River to gain access to the United States.
