Tragic Shooting at 345 Park Avenue Leaves Four Dead, Including NYPD Officer

On July 28, 2025, a devastating mass shooting unfolded at 345 Park Avenue, a prominent skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, claiming the lives of four individuals, including an NYPD officer, and leaving one person critically injured. The gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, opened fire in the building’s lobby before proceeding to the 33rd floor, where he fatally shot himself. This incident, described as the deadliest gun attack in New York City in 25 years, has reignited discussions about gun violence and mental health in the United States.

According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, surveillance footage captured Tamura exiting a double-parked black BMW, armed with an M4 assault-style rifle, just before 6:30 p.m. EDT. Upon entering the lobby, he immediately opened fire, killing Officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant and father of two with a third child on the way, who was working off-duty as a security guard. Tamura then shot a woman hiding behind a pillar, a security guard behind a desk, and another man in the lobby. He proceeded to an elevator, sparing a woman who exited before he rode to the 33rd floor, where he killed one more person in the offices of Rudin Management, the building’s owner, before taking his own life.

The skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue houses major organizations, including the National Football League (NFL) and investment firm Blackstone. Authorities believe Tamura intended to target the NFL’s offices, located on the fifth floor, but mistakenly took an elevator to Rudin Management’s offices. A three-page note found on Tamura’s body expressed grievances against the NFL, accusing the league of concealing the dangers of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease linked to repeated head trauma. The note also mentioned Tamura’s belief that he suffered from CTE, which he attributed to his history as a high school football player in California, and included a request to “study my brain.” However, police have found no evidence confirming a CTE diagnosis, as it cannot be definitively diagnosed in living individuals.

Tamura, who had a documented history of mental health issues, including two mental health crisis holds in Nevada in 2022 and 2024, drove cross-country from Las Vegas, passing through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey before arriving in New York City hours before the attack. He held a valid concealed carry permit issued by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in 2022 and worked as a surveillance department employee at the Horseshoe Las Vegas hotel and casino. Investigators found a rifle case, a loaded revolver, ammunition, a backpack, and prescription medication in his vehicle, which was cleared of explosives by the bomb squad.

Among the victims, Officer Islam was hailed as a hero by city officials, including Mayor Eric Adams, who praised his dedication to protecting New Yorkers. The other victims included a Blackstone executive, a security guard, and an unidentified woman, with their names withheld pending family notification. An NFL employee was critically injured but reported to be in stable condition.

The shooting triggered a massive emergency response, with police cordoning off the area and nearby buildings going into lockdown. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with shattered glass and rapid gunfire creating a “war zone” atmosphere during rush hour. The incident, one of at least 254 mass shootings in the U.S. in 2025 according to the Gun Violence Archive, has prompted renewed calls for addressing gun violence and mental health support. As investigations continue, the NYPD has sent teams to Las Vegas to search for further clues about Tamura’s motives, leaving a grieving city to mourn the loss of lives and honor the bravery of those who responded.
