United Nations (UN) Judge Lydia Mugambe has been convicted of slavery offenses in the United Kingdom. She was accused, and now convicted of, keeping a young woman as a slave in her home. The woman did house chores, cooking, and babysitting all for free. She discouraged the woman from finding other paid employment elsewhere. This arrangement is illegal in the United Kingdom. Such work must be paid and coercion tactics cannot be used.
Mugambe is from Uganda and she is a high court judge there. She was in the UK studying for a law PhD at the University of Oxford. While in the UK, she conspired with Ugandan deputy high commissioner John Leonard Mugerwa to arrange for the young woman to come live with her. The victim was, of course, also from Uganda. In a video showing Mugambe speaking to local UK authorities, she admitted that the woman had “worked” for her before. Mugambe will face sentencing in May of this year.
