Thomas Massie Ousted in Kentucky GOP Primary by Trump-Backed Challenger Ed Gallrein

In a major show of President Donald Trump’s influence over the Republican Party, longtime U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) lost his re-election bid in the GOP primary for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District on May 19, 2026.

Ed Gallrein, a fifth-generation Kentucky dairy farmer, Murray State University agriculture graduate, and retired Navy SEAL captain with 30 years of service—including deployments and four Bronze Stars—defeated the incumbent by a margin of roughly 54.8% to 45.2% (57,053 votes to 47,018), with nearly all precincts reporting.

The race became one of the most expensive—and most watched—U.S. House primaries in history, with more than $32 million poured into advertising. Trump personally handpicked and aggressively backed Gallrein to punish Massie, a libertarian-leaning lawmaker who has repeatedly broken with the president on issues ranging from foreign aid and taxes to border policy. Pro-Israel groups, long critical of Massie’s opposition to certain U.S. assistance packages, also contributed heavily to the effort against him.

Massie, who has represented the safely Republican northern Kentucky district since 2012, conceded on election night. In a characteristically wry speech, he noted the difficulty of reaching his opponent by phone, joking that it “took a while to find Ed Gallrein in Tel Aviv.” He emphasized that his campaign had remained “honorable” throughout.

Gallrein, running as a staunch “America First” candidate and vocal Trump supporter, now advances to the November general election in a district that heavily favors Republicans. His victory is being widely viewed as a clear demonstration of Trump’s ability to consolidate power within the GOP by targeting high-profile critics.

Kentucky’s 4th District, which includes suburbs of Cincinnati and Louisville along the Ohio River, will likely send Gallrein to Congress in the fall, continuing the seat’s long Republican hold.
