Competitive fencer Stephanie Turner was disqualified from a tournament after refusing to compete against a transgender person. Turner, a 31-year-old biological woman, took a knee when presented with the 20-year-old “transgender woman” named Redmond Sullivan. Turner was given a “black card” by the referee, which is the most severe penalty in fencing. The penalty resulted in her disqualification from the Maryland Cherry Blossom Tournament.
During a television news interview, Stephanie Turner said she has competed in this tournament every year for the past ten years. She said she has invested time, money, and energy into her sport… only to have a moment ruined by a man intruding in a space specifically for women. Her actions are being nearly universally praised as brave and bold due to the obvious unfair nature of biological men competing against women in sports.
