AT&T is experiencing a nationwide cell phone outage, and the cause of it is unknown, although there are a couple of theories. The first theory is that this was caused by space weather. A strong solar flare occurred at midnight, just before the outages. The flare was ranked R3, which is enough to disrupt radio communications. The other theory is that there is a cyberattack on mobile networks in the United States, specifically AT&T. Other networks that report outages may be due to interaction with AT&T customers or those networks utilizing AT&T backend systems. The outage was first reported at about 4:00 am Eastern Time. Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile cell networks were also affected, although AT&T had the most outages.
