Hannah Gann is a Philadelphia public-school teacher and activist who, in September 2026, admitted she had lied for years about her racial and ethnic background.
Gann, then in her mid-30s, taught 10th-grade history and social studies at the Workshop School, a project-based high school in West Philadelphia that serves a predominantly Black student body. She became a prominent voice in local pro-Palestinian and racial-justice organizing after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel. She spoke at protests and school-board meetings, organized teach-ins on “scholasticide” in Gaza, and defended fellow teachers disciplined over their social-media posts. A 2024 mobile billboard parked outside her school labeled her “Philadelphia’s Leading Antisemite.”
Colleagues and fellow organizers later said her claimed identity shifted over time: Palestinian, Tunisian, and Black. She referenced a Palestinian-born grandfather, family in the occupied territories, and financial hardship from sending money to relatives there. After returning from a Peace Corps teaching stint in Rwanda following her time at the University of Pennsylvania, she reportedly darkened her appearance with makeup and tanner and adopted speech patterns associated with African American Vernacular English.
Research circulated among activist groups found the grandfather was born in Baltimore, not Palestine, and that family members abroad lived in Israel. In college she had identified as a Jewish woman with relatives in the West Bank. She grew up in Falls Church, Virginia, one of the wealthiest suburbs in the country; her family’s home is now valued at about $1.8 million. Her father is a tax attorney who attended Penn and Yale Law.
In mid-September 2026, members of Philly Educators for Palestine and the Racial Justice Organizing Committee confronted her. After about an hour she admitted the claims were false. The groups issued a statement calling the deception a “betrayal,” saying they were “stunned, saddened and angered,” and permanently cutting ties. They asked her to acknowledge she is “a white woman of Jewish heritage and an Israeli settler family.”
Gann then posted statements and a video on Instagram. “I lied about my identity and have been lying for years,” she wrote. “I have no Palestinian or Tunisian heritage. I am a white woman of significant privilege and wealth.” She said she had hidden the truth from everyone in her Philadelphia life and from her own family, that half-truths had grown into outright lies, and that she felt “shame and sorrow and regret.” She insisted her commitment to the causes had been genuine and urged people not to let her actions discredit Palestinian voices or other activism. She did not mention her Jewish background in the public posts.
The Philadelphia School District said it was offering support to students and staff at the Workshop School and that Gann was no longer working with students. Online commentary quickly compared her to Rachel Dolezal, the former NAACP official who presented herself as Black. Critics from multiple directions called the episode an example of identity performance for credibility inside activist spaces; some former colleagues said it would increase skepticism toward others doing similar work. Gann described the fallout as a “sick and deluded distraction” from the issues she still supported.
The case highlights how claims of lived experience and inherited grievance can confer standing in certain political circles—and how quickly that standing collapses when the claims prove invented.
