Katie Zacharia leaves the White House press secretary role after just a few days, becoming the shortest-serving in the position’s history.
Zacharia, a California native and frequent conservative commentator, was named by President Donald Trump on October 9, 2026, to succeed Karoline Leavitt, who had left the role in late August. She officially began on or around October 12. Prior to the appointment, she worked as a senior communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group (operator of Truth Social), briefly served as a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson, and appeared regularly on outlets including Fox News and Newsmax. She holds a law degree from Pepperdine University (2011) and previously worked at a law firm in China, though she has acknowledged failing the California bar exam and is not a licensed attorney in the United States—a point that drew significant scrutiny after Trump referred to her as an “attorney.”
Her sole formal briefing, on October 13, lasted roughly 14–15 minutes. She largely read from prepared remarks praising the administration’s record, took questions from only three outlets (Breitbart, Fox News, and the Daily Mail), and announced that the White House had asked U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign. The appearance was widely described as halting or uneven; she made verbal slips and ended the session abruptly. Critics and some administration observers called the debut unprepared, while supporters noted the short notice and first-day pressures.
On October 16, Trump told reporters he had spoken with Zacharia and suggested she reconsider the role, saying she had been treated “very, very badly” or “brutalized” by the media and that she might be happier elsewhere. Multiple outlets, citing White House officials, reported that she is “transitioning out” of the job or has been let go/fired after about four to five days. Some reports indicated she could move to another role in the administration. The departure is shorter than Anthony Scaramucci’s roughly 11-day stint as White House communications director in 2017 and sets a modern record for the press secretary post itself.
As of October 16, the position is effectively vacant or in transition. Zacharia is a mother of four and has long been a public supporter of Trump and the MAGA movement. Her brief tenure highlights both the high visibility and rapid turnover possible in the role, especially amid midterm election pressures.
