“LA Mayoral Candidate Raman Responds to Nick Shirley’s Fraud Work: Build a System He Can’t Criticize”

Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman addressed independent journalist Nick Shirley’s fraud investigations during a recent appearance on The Iced Coffee Hour podcast with Graham Stephan, saying her goal is a city government so accountable that critics like Shirley “cannot come and find anything to complain about.”

The exchange occurred in an episode titled “WTF Happened To Los Angeles,” released around October 25, 2026. Stephan, who has publicly criticized Los Angeles governance and left the area years earlier over living conditions, asked Raman directly about waste, fraud, and abuse in the context of Shirley’s work. Raman responded: “I want people to trust government again… My hope is that we build a system here in Los Angeles where Nick Shirley cannot come and find anything to complain about. That’s what I want to do.”

Shirley, a Utah-based YouTuber and independent journalist with millions of subscribers, has gained national attention for on-the-ground videos alleging fraud in government-funded programs. His reporting has covered Minnesota daycare centers (prompting federal responses and at least one related guilty plea), New York adult daycares and home care, and California issues including hospices and Los Angeles homelessness-related projects. He has specifically highlighted examples in LA, such as an underutilized hotel project tied to homelessness spending under leadership including Raman and Mayor Karen Bass, describing the city’s approach as “pure fraud.”

In a reply on X, Shirley interpreted Raman’s comment as an acknowledgment that “the LA homeless industrial complex is full of fraud,” adding that “Audits do nothing if they don’t shut down the places committing fraud.”

Raman, a progressive City Council member for District 4 since 2020 (and a former Democratic Socialists of America affiliate who has shifted on some issues), is challenging incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in the November 3, 2026, general election. She advanced from the June primary and has emphasized restoring public trust through better oversight, audits, performance metrics for departments, and reforms to homelessness and housing programs. In the same interview and elsewhere, she has discussed auditing spending, holding agencies accountable, and addressing what she sees as failures in current systems while defending the need for housing production and services.

The comment comes amid broader scrutiny of Los Angeles homelessness spending, including questions about programs Raman has supported, such as eviction-defense funding, and citywide concerns over high per-unit costs and limited results. Raman’s campaign has faced separate ethics complaints (which it denies) regarding influencer disclosures, while Bass’s team has highlighted Raman’s evolving positions on issues like police and encampments.

The exchange underscores a central tension in the race: public skepticism about government efficacy on homelessness and fiscal oversight, versus candidates’ pledges to restore confidence through results and transparency. Raman positioned her response as a commitment to systemic improvements that would leave little for independent investigators to expose. Shirley’s follow-up framed it as recognition of ongoing problems that require more than audits.
