Memphis, Tennessee residents have come out to support President Trump deploying the National Guard to their city in an effort to reduce crime. Shelby County Republicans held a rally to support the move while business owners and regular citizens all over the city have vocalized their support. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee fully supports Trump’s decision, citing his own efforts over the past 7 years as Governor to make a dent in Memphis crime.
However, local leadership such as Memphis Mayor Paul Young and Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris have different ideas. Harris read a statement that alludes to the guard takeover as a form of fascism while Young says more money is needed and not necessarily the guard. The different in ideology between the two groups seems to be emblematic of the reason why crime in the city is so rampant and out of control.
