A school of thought says the recent crackdowns on crime in Miami Beach may have ruined tourism. Miami Beach is not much different than many other beach towns as far as the local economy depends heavily on tourism. So, when it was announced that there would be a heavy police presence to deter rowdy out-of-towners, it was met with cautious praise. Of course, it is good to rid a place of hooliganism and outright violent crime. Such actions are typically predictable during the Spring Break season. The flipside of deterring crime and violence is that law-abiding tourists are also discouraged. Parking garages with a $100 flat rate fee, barricades in front of restaurants to block street parking, and a slow-moving one-lane entrance to South Beach will prevent good and bad people from coming to visit.
