Nassau County, New York, has banned face masks from being worn in public. The only exceptions to this rule are medical conditions and/or religious imperatives. This ban aims to prevent people from hiding their identity in public. Crime committed by those obfuscating their faces was cited in the law’s drafting. It will be punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. Police will be empowered with discretion when it comes to enforcement. However, this will be a difficult thing to enforce among those who refuse to voluntarily comply. A public hearing on the issue descended into chaos, with at least one person being arrested by police.
