Sunny Hostin of “The View” blamed President Donald Trump for the “floating garbage island” remark referencing Puerto Rico. The comment was made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, also known as “Kill Tony.” He was on stage at the Donald Trump rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City doing what he does best… a comedy routine. Hinchcliffe cracked a few jokes about many different groups. He got to the line about Puerto Rico being a floating island of garbage, and the audience gave an audible gasp.
The Trump Campaign released a statement disavowing themselves from the joke. Hostin and a few others instantly seized on the moment, blaming Trump and calling the comedian a racist. Truthfully, the joke was not wise to make in the context of a Trump rally due to the red meat it provides for the mainstream media. However, there is context to the joke.
Puerto Rico has a severe problem with trash, from overflowing landfills to polluted rivers to inadequate sewage systems. Trash on the island is a problem. Rather than mainstream media addressing that issue, they’d instead label Kill Tony a racist and blame Donald Trump for giving him the platform.
