Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson Indicted on 30 Felony Counts in Connection with 2025 New Orleans Jailbreak

New Orleans, LA – April 30, 2026 – Outgoing Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson has been indicted on 30 felony counts stemming from last year’s high-profile jailbreak at the Orleans Parish Justice Center, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced Wednesday.

A special grand jury returned the indictment charging Hutson with malfeasance in office, obstruction of justice, and falsifying public records. The charges are directly linked to the May 16, 2025, escape of 10 inmates from the facility. According to investigators, the prisoners breached a hole in a cell wall behind a toilet, exploiting defective locks, broken surveillance cameras, and other longstanding security failures.

Hutson and Parish Chief Financial Officer Bianka Brown turned themselves in and posted bond shortly after the indictment was unsealed. Brown faces 20 related felony counts.

The dramatic breakout drew national attention and sparked intense scrutiny of the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office. At the time, Hutson publicly described the escape as potentially an “inside job” and criticized the facility’s deteriorating infrastructure. Ten inmates—some facing serious charges including murder—fled the jail that morning. All were eventually recaptured, with the last escapee taken into custody in Atlanta in October 2025.

The state investigation, led by the Attorney General’s office and involving a state auditor’s review, focused on whether sheriff’s office leadership ignored or concealed critical maintenance and security issues that enabled the breakout. “Those responsible for this prison break will be held accountable,” Murrill stated.

Hutson, who lost her reelection bid and is set to be succeeded by Sheriff-elect Michelle Woodfork, has not yet issued a public statement on the indictment. The case is expected to move forward in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court.

The indictment marks a stunning development in one of the largest jail escapes in recent U.S. history and raises fresh questions about accountability in local corrections leadership.
