What does it say about the state of our nation when a lawmaker cannot recite the Pledge of Allegiance?
In Los Angeles, Calif., city councilman Kevin de Leon said “It would be an honor” shortly before butchering the beloved national pledge.

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America…undervisible, I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America…for which it stands. One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all…oof.”
T ‘was a travesty. We learned the pledge as children. We say it at ball games and political events. And you’d think that an elected official would have enough pride to recite it all the same after hearing it before every single meeting. After all, he said it was “an honor.”
But it wouldn’t be a surprise if other lawmakers fail this as well. Respect for our country is at an all-time low. We should really take this to TikTok and make a “Pledge of Allegiance” challenge to see just how many Americans still have a shred of knowledge and honor for America.
Some people may find this issue to be too trivial for concern. (Perhaps our guy de Leon just didn’t get enough sleep or is having a hard time health-wise?) To them, I ask: if the Pledge of Allegiance isn’t worth remembering, then are our nation’s founding principles a bother as well?
Perhaps that’s exactly what’s happening. Too many lawmakers and elected officials are too concerned about their personal agendas and movements than they are about what has historically made our nation the most powerful in the world. Or maybe it’s just passive ignorance, poor memory or disregard.
Lastly, what’s interesting about de Leon’s version of the pledge is that the words “to the republic for which it stands” was left out. That’s critical because so many misunderstand our nation to be a democracy when it’s truly a democratic constitutional republic, which means there are limits to government. If a pledge like de Leon’s is considered acceptable, then our patriotism and our nation as we know it is most certainly in peril.
