The head coach of NFL football team Las Vegas Raiders, Jon Gruden, resigns after a batch of offensive emails leaked. The emails date back to 2011 during a time of intense negotiations between owners and players over finances. Gruden coached the Raiders between 1998 and 2001, then the Tampa Bay Buccanneers from 2002 to 2008. In 2009, Gruden was hired as a color commentator for ESPN. It was during his time at ESPN when the emails were sent between him and the former President of the (then) Washington Redskins, Bruce Allen. It is currently not clear who obtained these emails or who leaked them.
Gruden is accused of saying racist, homophobic, and misogynistic things in the trove of “leaked” emails. The first “offensive” comment to come out was about NFLPA (National Football League Players Association) executive director DeMaurice Smith. Gruden wrote: “Dumboriss Smith has lips the size of michellin tires”. The context of that comment hasn’t been stated yet. But it was enough to draw the ire of many within the league and color commentators outside of the league. Cries of systemic racism predictably followed the leak of this comment.
Interestingly enough, the email just happened to leak just a few hours before the 32-team vote to reinstate Smith into his fifth term as the Union’s leader. He had been facing unusual opposition lately due to allegations of bending too much to the will of the owners, forsaking the wishes of the players. One could say that this leak was strategically timed to create discord between Smith and the owners. After all, several players dislike Smith because they think he is too giving to the owners. The leak could have just been a simple coincidence. However, incidents like this are not uncommon. Another “leak” happened during contract negotiations from ESPN host Maria Taylor.
Gruden denies any allegations of racism. Allegations of homophobia and misogyny came from other comments Jon Gruden wrote about NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and then-Vice President Joe Biden. Gruden referred to Goodell as a “fa**ot and a clueless, anti-football p**ssy. He then referred to Joe Biden as a nervous clueless p**sy. Pictures of (then) Washington Redskins cheerleaders in skimpy clothing (as usual) were exchanged between Gruden and Allen. All of this information was discovered during an investigation of the Redskins’ alleged problematic working environment when that was brought to the forefront a year or so ago.
It is quite interesting that the media would invest time into reading emails that could have been stolen then leaked to the public. Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, found himself in a similar situation. The media criticized anyone who viewed the laptop or disseminated any information from it as a tool of the Russians. This narrative was even spun on Fox News of all places when anchor “Kennedy” attacked former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani over the laptop. Racism and homophobia aren’t qualities that Jon Gruden has beyond the shadow of a doubt. But the mainstream media is most certainly demonstrably deceptive and biased.
