Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot accused the Fraternal Order of Police of trying to foment an insurrection due to the number of officers who are refusing to comply with vaccine mandates. The City of Chicago is requiring all police officers to disclose their vaccination status on a website portal. As of the writing of this article, over three thousand officers have not complied with the vaccination disclosure. That number equates to about one-third of the entire Chicago Police Department.
If Chicago Police officers do not comply with the vaccine mandate, then they could be suspended without pay. Obviously, this is a serious issue. Especially during a time like this when short-staffing has hit every sector of employment in the country. Attempting to replace 33% of Chicago’s police force, especially in a short period of time, seems like a fool’s errand. The threat of losing income has not swayed the majority of these police officers. Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) President John Calanzara, Jr. says that the common refrain from the officers is that they are “holding the line”.
