Mary Gay Scanlon, a Democratic U.S. House Rep from Philadelphia, was carjacked at gunpoint in broad daylight after an event in the city. This particular event featured several other elected officials. The robbers, identified as two young black males, also took her purse and phone. Scanlon was fortunately not hurt at all during the incident. Police (and possibly the FBI) found Scanlon’s Acura SUV in Wilmington, Delaware a short time later. The vehicle was occupied by several suspects who were all arrested.
Philadelphia is no stranger to crime. Especially not in 2021. The city has already reached a 30-year high for homicides, approaching 550. That amount is the largest since the era of the crack wars, which was famously followed by Joe Biden’s 1994 crime bill. Most of the killers in Philadelphia are young black men who take the lives of other young black men. This pattern is the very same in other cities. Chicago is nearly a twin city to Philadelphia when it comes to crime and violence. However, Chicago is much worse.
Illinois State Senator Kimberly Lightford (D) and her husband Eric McKennie, were carjacked at gunpoint in the Chicago suburb of Broadview. The couple were also fired upon by the assailants but were unharmed. The carjacking happened shortly after a Christmas event that took place close to the scene, eerily similar to the Mary Gay Scanlon incident. It also happened on the same day. Chicago is also nearing an all-time record high in homicides that makes the Al Capone days look like a walk in the park. As of December 19th, 2021, Chicago has recorded 783 homicides.
Mary Gay Scanlon is apparently a proponent of police reform. This type of policy ultimately leads to the police being defunded and crime rising as a result. Philadelphia is gripped with drugs, crime, and violence just the same as other major Democrat-controlled cities across America. Cities that have defunded police or that have otherwise demoralized them are now trying to reverse course. San Francisco is one example and Chicago is another one.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is now asking for federal help to control the violence in her city. But when Trump was in office, this same federal help was off the table due to concerns of brutality. Politics are going to have to take a backseat to the safety and well-being of constituents. If this priority is not taken up with urgency and certainty then the issues in these major cities will simply continue to deteriorate.
