Elon Musk has threatened to sue the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) over their heavy censorship and boycott efforts against X, formerly known as Twitter. Of course, Musk now owns the social media company after a November 2022 acquisition. Since that moment, the ADL launched a campaign against them, saying that advertisers should not do business with a company that harbors hate, racism, and anti-semitism. Elon Musk says that this campaign resulted in a 60% drop in U.S. ad revenue that they have yet to recover from.
X has been labeled as a platform that highlights and protects anti-semites by the likes of the ADL. Musk says this branding effort is false and damaging, therefore slanderous and the only way to remedy it would be in court with a lawsuit. Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of the ADL, says that his organization is just a small non-profit in New York and does not have the power that X and Elon Musk have. This is demonstrably false as Greenblatt is able to hop on any television station at any time to express himself without much kickback.
The ADL is tied to many organizations that drive big dollars all over the world. In an MSNBC interview with Andrew Ross Sorkin, Greenblatt stated that his company “works with” all social media companies to make them “get better.” This sounds like the ADL forces its ideology upon companies to make them abide by their will. Which is a powerful thing for some small, relatively unimportant New York City non-profit to achieve.
