Buffalo Bills Safety Damar Hamlin is awake and showing great signs of improvement, including the ability to communicate. He cannot actually speak as of the writing of this article, due to still being intubated. Hamlin can, however, communicate via pen and pad. One of the first questions he asked upon becoming awake was if the Bills had won the game. The doctors say they responded, “yes, you have won the game of life.”
This is very news encouraging because it points to at least two different things. The first is that his brain function appears to be intact. Doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center labeled Hamlin as “neurologically intact”. The second thing his ability to communicate shows is that even if he does have some brain damage, it is not severe because he can remember events and he is cognizant of his surroundings. Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest during Monday Night Football against the Cincinnati Bengals after he initiated a tackle with a player from the opposing team.
