The Speaker of Canada’s House of Commons, Anthony Rota, has apologized for praising a World War 2 Nazi from Ukraine. 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka sat in the gallery and got a standing ovation in parliament after Rota said he was a “hero” during a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Justin Trudeau was in attendance and applauded with the rest of the gallery. Zelensky got several standing ovations during his speech at this event.
Trudeau shifted the blame for this incident onto the Speaker, as if he did not know who this man was. Yaroslav Hunka served as a volunteer in the Waffen SS. They committed atrocities against Poles and Jews during World War 2. This is evidenced and documented. However, Hunka (who now lives in Canada) was introduced and praised as a veteran who fought for Ukraine’s independence.
Such incidents are not new or unique to Canada or the Western World, for that matter. The West does not appear to have a problem with Nazis and/or Nazi collaborators as long as they are from or support Ukraine. There are recent stories of the United States funding Nazis in the AZOV Battalion in Ukraine. Ex-cons turned federal information have given their own testimony on the issue.
