NFL hall-of-famer Ed Reed was recently fired by Bethune-Cookman University after a profanity-laden rant on Instagram about the school. Reed was just recently hired a few weeks ago. Students at Bethune-Cookman say that he accomplished more in that very short period of time than the previous coaching staff had done in the past five years. He was fired for pointing out some of the fatal flaws of the school. His primary concern was safety and cleanliness. Reed passionately stated that “crackheads” were roaming around campus with no security to rebuff them. There is also the issue of mold and trash that exists all over common areas, less-used areas, and student dorms. Hundreds of students protested the Board of Trustees after Ed Reed’s removal. His firing has created a renewed dialogue about the efficacy of black-centric institutions in 2023 and beyond.
