FBI Director Kash Patel Faces Allegations of Excessive Drinking and Unavailability

In a bombshell report published April 17, 2026, The Atlantic alleged that FBI Director Kash Patel has alarmed colleagues at the bureau, the Justice Department, and the White House with episodes of excessive drinking and unexplained absences. The article, titled “The FBI Director Is MIA” and written by Sarah Fitzpatrick, cites more than two dozen unnamed current and former officials, including FBI personnel, law enforcement sources, and administration insiders.

According to the report, Patel is known to drink to the point of “obvious intoxication” at private venues such as Ned’s club in Washington, D.C.—often in the presence of White House and Trump administration staff—and at the Poodle Room in Las Vegas, where he reportedly spends weekends. Six sources told The Atlantic that early in Patel’s tenure, morning meetings and briefings had to be rescheduled because of late-night drinking. On multiple occasions over the past year, members of his security detail allegedly struggled to wake him because he appeared intoxicated, with information passed to Justice Department and White House officials. In one instance, officials reportedly requested “breaching equipment”—tools typically used by SWAT or hostage-rescue teams—after Patel was unreachable behind locked doors.

The piece also referenced a February 2026 incident in Italy, where Patel was filmed chugging beer with the U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team after their gold-medal win. Two officials said the episode prompted President Trump—who does not drink and whose brother died from alcoholism—to call Patel to express his displeasure. Some sources questioned whether alcohol contributed to Patel sharing inaccurate information on active investigations, describing his behavior as erratic and a potential national-security concern.

Patel, 46, a longtime Trump ally and former public defender who was confirmed as FBI Director earlier in the administration, has vehemently denied the claims. He called the story a “hit piece” and “categorically false,” based on anonymous sources and lacking any public corroborating evidence. On April 18, he threatened legal action, telling reporters, “I’ll see you in court.”

On Monday, April 20, Patel followed through, filing a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic and reporter Sarah Fitzpatrick. The suit accuses the magazine of publishing fabricated allegations designed to damage his reputation and leadership of the nation’s premier law-enforcement agency, which employs roughly 38,000 people. Patel’s legal team argues that a responsible pre-publication investigation would have disproven the claims.

The controversy has sparked widespread media coverage, with outlets from The Guardian and Time to Forbes and the New York Post reporting on both the allegations and Patel’s swift rebuttal. Supporters have dismissed the story as politically motivated, while critics inside and outside the FBI have raised questions about leadership stability amid ongoing national-security challenges.

As the defamation case moves forward, the allegations remain unproven in court and rely entirely on anonymous sourcing. Patel continues to serve as FBI Director, with the White House describing him as a “critical player” on the administration’s law-and-order team. The episode highlights the intense scrutiny faced by high-profile Trump appointees and the blurred lines between personal conduct and public duty at the highest levels of federal law enforcement.
