The FBI has opened a criminal investigation into the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore, Maryland. Agents dressed in all black were seen boarding the Dali by ladder and boat in the Patapsco River on Tuesday morning. Officials confirmed the FBI’s presence aboard the wrecked cargo ship. The FBI is investigating whether the crew knew of any issues with the vessel before unmooring from the dock in Dundalk.
Other parallel investigations are happening as the FBI is aboard the vessel to determine the fault and, ultimately, who will pay for this disaster. The Key Bridge connected a critical stretch of road that was used not only by regular passengers but also by companies transporting hazardous materials. It is an essential East Coast travel artery. Rebuilding the road and clearing the port may take years, and the court process may take an equivalent amount of time.
