A five-year-old boy named Cannon Hinnant was shot and killed by his next-door neighbor, a 25-year-old man by the name of Darius Sessoms. The incident happened at around 5:30pm on Sunday, August 9th, 2020 in Wilson, North Carolina as Cannon was outside playing with his siblings. Witnesses said that Sessoms ran up to the boy and shot him at point-blank range sometime after the boy rode his bike into Sessoms’ yard.

Making Sense of the Senseless
The story of Cannon Hinnant’s shooting as currently known does not make much sense. Cannon’s father and his shooter knew each other and could even be described as friends. Sessoms’ family lived on the same street for 28 years. Sessoms and Cannon’s family were close and had known each other for years. On the Friday before the shooting, Sessoms had dinner with Cannon’s father.
If Cannon’s shooting was a random act of violence, then it would make more sense. It would simply be described as a mentally ill or simply violent man attacking a little boy that he doesn’t know. But since Sessoms had probably known the little boy his entire life and was good friends with his father, the situation simply does not make sense.
Shady Background
Sessoms does, however, have a criminal record. No violent charges are immediately known about but he did have an open warrant for maintaining a drug residence. There could also be a gun charge in there as well. A theory floated out there is that Sessoms and Cannon’s father had a dispute over money or drugs. But if that’s the case then why were they seen together having dinner like friends just a couple of days before the shooting?
Early In The Case
As of right now which is Wednesday, August 12, 2020, there are more questions than answers in the death of Cannon Hinnant. The shooter was captured a short time after the shooting alive in Goldsboro, NC, which is about a half hour north of Wilson. Sessoms has little to no chance of ever coming home again due to the fact several witnesses in the neighborhood witnessed his senseless act. All that remains at this point is to get an explanation behind Sessoms’ despicable act of violence.
