Frontier Airlines Flight Strikes and Kills Pedestrian on Denver Runway, Prompting Emergency Evacuation

Denver International Airport (DIA), May 9, 2026 — A Frontier Airlines jet bound for Los Angeles struck and killed a pedestrian on a runway during takeoff late Friday night, triggering a brief engine fire, smoke in the cabin, and a full emergency evacuation of all passengers and crew.

The incident occurred around 11:19 p.m. on May 8 when Frontier Flight 4345, an Airbus A321neo operating as flight F94345, was accelerating on Runway 17L. The aircraft, carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members, reportedly hit the individual during the takeoff roll.

According to airport officials, the pedestrian — who has not been publicly identified — was not an airport employee. The person had jumped the airport’s perimeter fence and crossed the active runway just two minutes before being struck. The airport’s fenceline was later found to be intact.

Pilots immediately aborted the takeoff after the collision. Air traffic control audio captured the crew reporting, “We just hit somebody,” followed by notice of an engine fire. A brief fire on the right engine was quickly extinguished by Denver Fire Department crews. Smoke filled the cabin, prompting the pilots to order an evacuation on the runway using emergency slides.

All 231 people on board evacuated safely and were bused back to the terminal. Twelve individuals reported minor injuries, with five transported to local hospitals for evaluation. Most passengers were rebooked on a later Frontier flight by Saturday morning.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the incident in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Denver International Airport, and local law enforcement. Runway 17L remained closed Saturday morning for the investigation but was expected to reopen later in the day.

Frontier Airlines issued a statement saying it was “deeply saddened by this event” and is cooperating fully with authorities. The airline has taken the aircraft out of service for inspection.

The rare event has drawn attention to airport perimeter security, though officials emphasized that the fence was not breached in any structural way. No further details about the pedestrian’s motives have been released.
