The parent companies of Google and Facebook made deep cuts to diversity, equity, and inclusion programs (DEI) in 2023. The reason cited is, quite simply, cost-cutting. Diversity became an initiative of corporate giants in the United States in 2020 after the death of George Floyd. Companies often marketed themselves as friendly to different races, sexual orientations, and religions. This marketing strategy, however, is not very cost-effective. The jobs created from DEI initiatives did not push the company forward financially. Not only did the marketing not help these companies financially, but people also began to care less about diversity initiatives as the George Floyd fallout died.
