Holdout juror Michael Desronvil has publicly defended his vote as the Lindsay Clancy case returns to court amid sharp criticism from defense attorney Kevin Reddington.
Lindsay Clancy’s first-degree murder trial in Plymouth, Massachusetts, ended in a mistrial on September 4 after jurors deadlocked 11-1 following more than 38 hours of deliberations over seven days. Eleven jurors favored a finding of not guilty by lack of criminal responsibility, citing postpartum psychosis. Desronvil, 48, stood alone for conviction, concluding Clancy knew what she was doing when she strangled her children—Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months—in January 2023.
Desronvil first responded in a September 17 statement released through attorney Edward Paltzik. He rejected fellow jurors’ claims that he admitted reasonable doubt yet refused to apply the law. “I didn’t have any doubts,” he said. “As I tried to explain different possible theories during deliberation, I kept getting cut off as if I had doubts based on the evidence present. Based on all the physical evidence, key witnesses and what the prosecution presented, I thought it was enough proof that she knew exactly what she was doing and planned.”
On September 28 he appeared on camera for the first time in a short video aired on Fox News’ Hannity. He thanked supporters for prayers and emotional support, credited his Catholic faith and role as a father, and tried to shift attention away from himself: “I know the whole focus has been on me, but we want to reel everything back and put the focus on the three angels that’s at hand. The ones that can’t speak for themselves, the ones that can’t defend themselves, and the ones that can’t fight their battles.” He named Cora, Dawson, and Callan.
Those remarks landed as the case reconvened for a September 29 status hearing before Judge William Sullivan. Reddington has used the interval to attack both the holdout and the prosecution’s proof. Immediately after the mistrial he described the other jurors as having been “robbed by one man” and said he hoped that juror could “sleep well at night.” He later called Paltzik a “foul individual” after Paltzik accused him of mounting an unconstitutional attack on jury independence.
In court Tuesday, Reddington went further, telling the judge the entire case “is based on speculation” and that there is “not enough evidence that this woman killed those children.” He pointed to Clancy’s injuries, her claimed lack of memory, and alleged investigative gaps. Prosecutors called the argument “laughable.” Reddington has also moved to dismiss on double-jeopardy grounds and to investigate Desronvil’s questionnaire answers, alleged cellphone use during deliberations, and other conduct. The judge scheduled a November 2 hearing on the juror-inquiry motion and pressed both sides toward a possible retrial date.
Desronvil’s public comments and Reddington’s courtroom rhetoric have turned a hung jury into a running public fight over who failed to follow the law—the lone juror who would not acquit, or the lawyer now arguing the evidence never supported the charges in the first place. The children remain the only parties who cannot speak.
