Karmelo Anthony Murder Trial Opens in Collin County with Self-Defense at Center of Track Meet Stabbing Case

McKinney, Texas — The murder trial of 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony began this week in Collin County, nearly 14 months after he fatally stabbed 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during an altercation at a high school track meet in Frisco. Anthony, who has pleaded not guilty and claims self-defense, faces first-degree murder charges. If convicted, he could receive a sentence ranging from five years to life in prison.

The incident occurred on April 2, 2025, at David Kuykendall Stadium during a regional track and field championship delayed by thunderstorms. Anthony, a student-athlete from Centennial High School and captain of his track team, was sheltering under a tent used by Memorial High School’s team when a confrontation erupted. According to court accounts, Austin Metcalf and his twin brother Hunter asked Anthony to leave the area. Words were exchanged, and a physical scuffle followed: Metcalf pushed Anthony, who then pulled a black knife from his backpack and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest. Metcalf collapsed after running down the bleachers and died in his brother’s arms despite efforts by athletic trainers. Anthony surrendered to police shortly afterward, telling officers he acted in self-defense and stating, “He put his hands on me, I told him not to.”

Anthony, who had no prior criminal record, was charged as an adult under Texas law. A grand jury indicted him on first-degree murder in June 2025. His bond was initially set at $1 million but reduced to $250,000 in April 2025; he was released under strict conditions, including adult supervision and weekly check-ins with the court. He graduated high school with a 3.7 GPA while on bond.

Jury selection began June 1, 2026, before Judge John Roach Jr., drawing nearly 600 prospective jurors. The final panel of 12 jurors and six alternates includes no Black members, despite Anthony being Black and Metcalf White. The defense raised a Batson challenge over the prosecution’s strikes of three Black female jurors, but the judge rejected it after prosecutors offered race-neutral explanations. The racially charged nature of the case has fueled intense public scrutiny, protests outside the courthouse, heated exchanges between supporters of both families, and widespread online debate. Both sides have faced harassment, doxxing, and threats; fundraising efforts have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for legal fees and family support.

Opening statements on June 4 highlighted sharply divergent views. Prosecutor Bill Wirskye described the stabbing as a “sneak attack” and “senseless murder,” arguing it was not self-defense. He told jurors Anthony “lied when he got caught” and discarded the knife afterward. The defense, led by Mike Howard, countered that Anthony—described as a slight 130-pound athlete living with epilepsy—acted out of “fear and chaos” when confronted by the larger Metcalf twins. Enhanced surveillance video, analyzed by a forensic expert and shown to jurors on the first day of testimony, is expected to play a central role, alongside emotional accounts from coaches, trainers, and Metcalf’s family.

The trial, expected to last about two weeks, continues with testimony from eyewitnesses. No cameras are allowed in the courtroom, but the case has captured national attention amid broader discussions of self-defense claims, youth violence, and perceptions of justice. Anthony’s family and supporters maintain his innocence; Metcalf’s family remembers him as a high-achieving football MVP and college-bound student with a 4.0 GPA.

As proceedings unfold, the outcome will hinge on whether jurors believe the evidence supports Anthony’s claim of self-defense or the prosecution’s portrayal of an unprovoked killing. Updates are expected daily as the two-week trial progresses in McKinney.
