On October 9, 2026, boxing legend Mike Tyson made a high-profile appearance at the White House alongside President Donald Trump before joining him for a campaign rally in Syracuse, New York. The day followed an interview in which Tyson offered strong public praise for the president.
Just before the White House stop, Tyson appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored. He said he had voted for Trump and “ran the streets for him,” adding that he was “very proud of him” and that “everybody should be proud of him.” Tyson highlighted Trump’s resilience through financial difficulties, legal challenges, and other adversity, including court proceedings. He remarked that “if you didn’t know who Donald Trump was and you didn’t know his name, you would think he’s Black,” framing the president’s experiences as similar to struggles he associated with Black Americans, and noted that many people facing comparable pressures might have suffered a breakdown, yet Trump “handled it.”
At the White House, Tyson appeared in the briefing room and spoke briefly with reporters. He said the president had asked him to join the trip to Syracuse. When asked about the midterms, he replied that he thought “Donald Trump will win.” Later, Trump and Tyson walked out together. Trump introduced him to reporters as “Iron Mike Tyson,” joked that he would not be fighting him that day, and said he had long been a fan. The two then departed together, ultimately flying to Syracuse on Air Force One.
At the Oncenter Convention Center rally supporting Republican candidates, including New York gubernatorial hopeful Bruce Blakeman, Trump pointed out Tyson in the crowd. He recalled Tyson’s prime as a fearsome heavyweight, called him one of the greatest fighters in history, and quipped that he would never fight him. Trump also joked that Blakeman, standing near Tyson, had chosen the right person for “protection.” Trump then brought Tyson on stage. The former champion kept his remarks short: “I’m just happy to be here with my president, President Trump. And there’s no way in the world I would be here if it weren’t for a President like President Trump.”
The public appearance marked one of the most visible recent moments in a relationship that dates to the 1980s in Atlantic City, when Trump hosted Tyson’s title fight against Michael Spinks. A Netflix documentary on Tyson, scheduled to premiere shortly afterward, also highlighted their long association. Tyson’s comments and presence drew both attention and mixed reactions online, as the boxer publicly aligned himself with the president ahead of the midterms.
