NYC Mayor Introduces Vaccine Mandate For City Workers & More

New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio has announced vaccine mandates for workers and visitors of certain establishments. The often embattled NYC Mayor announced that city workers must be vaccinated beyond those who work indoors, but it wasn’t clear if they have the option of being regularly tested. DeBlasio stated that the goal is to stop the Delta variant and end the COVID era altogether. Masks will also be required depending on the venue. As an example – certain Broadway plays will require proof of vaccination and also the wearing of masks.

Needless to say, vaccine mandates will trigger court action. There is the obvious issue of medical (and possibly religious) discrimination. If a person cannot get the vaccine due to advice from their doctor, and they are excluded from certain activities or employment, that will be a problem. Certain religious groups do not vaccinate at all. If people are required to do something that goes against their faith, that will also be an issue. Proponents of vaccine mandates may state that indoor events like Broadway plays are optional and not part of a person’s daily needs. That may be true, but there is still an issue of discrimination. This was part of the problem with Jim Crow segregation.

The “Key To NYC Pass” is the mechanism upon which the vaccine mandate will be enforced. The rule begins on August 16 and enforcement officially begins on the first day of school in New York, which is September 13th.
