According to a recent study, Ohio’s new “Constitutional Carry” law has produced impressive results. The law, which removes the concealed carry permit requirement, was enacted in June 2022. The study scoured data from June 2021 to June 2023 and found that violent crime had decreased one year after the law compared to one year before.
This data is the exact opposite of what critics of the law feared would happen, which is an increase. Their contention was that if a barrier to gun ownership was removed, then criminals would become emboldened, therefore increasing crime. The reality is that criminals tend to ignore laws. Removing the requirement of a concealed carry permit strengthens the ability of law-abiding citizens to protect themselves.
