President Donald Trump has commuted the sentence of former Chicago gang leader Larry Hoover. The 74-year-old is most well known for creating the Chicago street gang “Gangster Disciples”. Before Trump’s commutation, Hoover was serving six life sentences in Colorado after a 1997 conviction of running a continuous criminal enterprise. He was convicted of the charges while in prison for a 1973 Chicago murder.
Hoover has been in custody since 1973, without pause, and his original sentence was 150-200 years for the crime in Chicago. Since the 1973 murder was a state conviction, Trump’s commutation does not impact that, therefore he will probably be transferred from the Federal Prison in Colorado into an Illinois state penitentiary.
Illinois is currently governed by fairly liberal leadership, and after a 52-year-long prison sentence, they have mercy on him and decide to commute his sentence as well, therefore granting his release. Hoover has been with the same woman since 1968 and they were officially legally allowed to be married in 2020. He also has three children, most likely all adults.
