Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump announced on Thursday, April 2, 2026, that he has removed Pam Bondi as U.S. Attorney General after a tumultuous 14-month tenure.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that Bondi would be transitioning to a new role in the private sector. He named Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche — who previously served as Trump’s personal defense lawyer — as acting Attorney General until a permanent replacement is chosen.
The decision comes amid growing frustration within the White House over Bondi’s leadership at the Justice Department. According to the Daily Mail, what may have been the last straw for President Trump was the allegation that Bondi tipped off Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) about the FBI’s plans to release investigative documents related to Swalwell’s past association with suspected Chinese intelligence operative Christine Fang, also known as “Fang Fang.” The report claims Trump believed Bondi had intervened due to a personal friendship with the congressman.
Sources also report the president was dissatisfied with the pace and results of key priorities, including investigations into his political opponents and the handling of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Bondi, a longtime Trump ally and former Florida Attorney General, had been confirmed in early 2025 and worked to align the DOJ with the administration’s agenda. Her ouster marks the second major Cabinet-level shake-up in less than a month.
In response, Bondi is said to be moving on positively, with allies noting her continued loyalty to the president. This is a developing story.
