In a candid appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press on May 24, 2026, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) reflected on his surprising loss in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District GOP primary earlier that week. The longtime libertarian-leaning congressman was defeated by Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL handpicked and endorsed by President Donald Trump.
Massie, who had represented the northern Kentucky district since 2012 and often broke with party leadership on issues like spending, foreign aid, and Trump’s agenda, did not shy away from analyzing why he fell short. In the interview with host Kristen Welker, he pointed to a flood of AI-generated “slop” and deepfake advertisements that he said disproportionately influenced older voters. One such ad falsely depicted Massie in compromising situations, including holding hands with progressive Democrats like Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar—complete with disclaimers, but still effective at misleading viewers.
“It was actually very effective on the boomers,” Massie said, adding that the campaign expanded the pool of voters with “a lot of misinformed, uninformed voters.” He noted that while Gallrein won the over-65 demographic, Massie dominated among younger Republicans—winning voters under 45 by a commanding 30 points, according to exit polling.
Despite the defeat, Massie struck a hopeful tone for the future of the Republican Party and the broader conservative movement. “That’s only going to work for a little bit longer,” he said of the tactics targeting older voters. “The boomers are going to, you know, leave this country to the Gen X, and the Gen Z, and the Gen Y, and the millennials.” He emphasized that his strong performance with younger voters signaled a generational shift that could reshape the GOP in coming years.
Massie’s primary loss marks the latest high-profile example of Trump’s influence in purging perceived dissenters from the Republican ranks ahead of the 2026 midterms. Gallrein, who thanked Trump effusively in his victory speech, is now heavily favored to win the solidly red district in November. For his part, Massie told Welker he is keeping all options open for the future, declining to rule anything in—or out.
