The Little Mermaid Review Bombing Forces IMDB To Change Its Policy

The review bombing of “The Little Mermaid” movie has caused IMDB to change its website policy. IMDB allows users to submit reviews just as certified Hollywood critics are. Sometimes, however, IMDB detects irregularities with user-submitted reviews. Many of these reviews are discarded and not counted toward the official “user review” tally. It is not quite clear why The Little Mermaid is being review bombed, but there is an obvious guess. A lot of controversy surrounded the film over the “race-swapping” of the lead character, Ariel.

The Little Mermaid was originally portrayed by a white young lady in the original animated movie. The new, live-action movie cast the black singer and actress Halle Bailey as Ariel. This caused people who saw the original to speak out in protest. What people often do is protest against things like this by using their voices in whatever way they can. This is why review bombing happens. Because people are simply trying to send a message instead of actually commenting on the actual quality of the movie.
