Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave a speech before congress on Wednesday, December 21st, 2022 that was well received by both sides of the political aisle. The address, however, was not well received by the general public outside the Washington, D.C. beltway. Zelensky spent much of his time behind the podium giving basic talking points and one-liners about the severity of the situation in Ukraine. Of course, he took time to thank the United States for its contribution to Ukraine’s war effort against the Russian Federation. Zelensky also said that the munitions and cash isn’t quite enough and that he hopes to receive more. The United States has already given Ukraine billions if not, hundreds of billions of dollars to aid in their self-defense.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, said that defending Ukraine is currently the number one priority of the United States. The general public, who are dealing with serious crises like fentanyl and inflation, most likely do not agree with McConnell. Therein lies the problem with Zelensky’s speech. Washington D.C. establishment politicians apparently have no problem sending Ukraine money to fight what can only be classified as a proxy war against Russia. The American people most likely do not see this fight as something that they should be involved with at all. Especially not to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars.
