Dubai Police has issued a sharp rebuke against U.S. media over the story about a black American woman who was recently detained. The initial story is that a woman named Tierra Allen, also known as “The Sassy Trucker” on social media was detained in Dubai for “screaming.” According to Allen’s mother, Allen and a friend got into an accident while driving a rental car. Allen was the passenger. When Allen returned to the company to retrieve her personal items from inside the vehicle, she was prompted by the company to pay money. This is when things took a turn for the worse.
Tierra Allen and an employee from the rental car company got into an argument that escalated when Allen began screaming. Initial reports from the media say she was arrested for screaming in public, but Dubai police say there is actually more to the story. She was officially detained, and released, over charges of defamation and slander. Such offenses are serious in Dubai. According to their law: “publicly attributing statements to another person which may expose him to contempt of others” can fetch a fine of up to Dh20,000 and two years in prison.
