The city council of Asheville, NC votes 7-0 to approve slavery reparations for black residents. They also voted to give a formal apology for slavery. The decision comes amidst Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests across the nation and in Asheville. The small city of less than 100,000 population was also the site of an attempted CHAZ / CHOP style occupation in June that was quickly squashed.
Christmas in The Summer?
The “reparations” measure does not call for any type of cash payments to residents of Asheville. The city has essentially given a long list of promises to residents. Not much different than what a politician would say while on the campaign trail. Part of the resolution reads as follows:
“The resulting budgetary and programmatic priorities may include but not be limited to increasing minority home ownership and access to other affordable housing, increasing minority business ownership and career opportunities, strategies to grow equity and generational wealth, closing the gaps in health care, education, employment and pay, neighborhood safety and fairness within criminal justice.”
Democratic Smoke And Mirrors
Seems like quite a bit of word salad which is par for the course when it comes to the Democratic party. The presumptive Democratic Party Presidential nominee Joe Biden has responded with similar talking points when asked about reparations. The nebulous, almost lawyer-like response is purposefully vague so no clear answer is given. So when reparations don’t come, a person like Joe Biden can’t be accused of lying.
Asheville’s City Council also appealed to emotion, which is also very common among leftist politicians. City Councilman Young said the following: “Hundreds of years of black blood spilled that basically fills the cup we drink from today. It is simply not enough to remove statutes. Black people in this country are dealing with issues that are systemic in nature.” To call that statement dramatic might be a bit of an understatement.
Copycat Magicians
Other cities will undoubtedly attempt to follow Asheville’s lead on the issue of reparations in a veiled attempt to squash civil unrest and please their “woke” constituents. Residents will of course be disappointed when they don’t get a big bag of money in their bank account but may appreciate the olive branch.
If actual cash payments are doled out, then that will be worse than the empty promises. Because the last thing the black community actually needs is more government handouts. That’s the reason why people are upset today. The lack of motivation to become successful is tied to the dependence upon the Government. More of the same poison pills that created the illness will not provide a cure.
