Baltimore Facing Historically Low Levels Of Police Shortages

Baltimore City is desperate for police officers amid a historic staffing shortage. One district in Baltimore recently had just three officers to patrol an area with 61,000 residents. Non-emergency calls are left unanswered as there isn’t enough staff to deal with the problem.

This problem can be linked directly back to the 2020 post of George Floyd when the “defund the police” movement took off. The City Council voted to remove $22 million from the Police budget during that time. The council reversed course last year, attempting to “re-fund” the police with 28 million dollars added back into the budget. However, the damage was done by that time as hundreds of officers had moved on, and recruiting new officers became an uphill battle.
