WNBA basketball player Brittney Griner has spoken out for the first time since her time in a Russian prison. She spent 10 months in what can only be described as a work camp in 2022 after she was detained at an airport for a drug violation. She had at least two vape cartridges that contained THC, which is the active ingredient in marijuana. Despite efforts to legalize the controlled substance in the United States, it is still very much illegal in the Russian Federation.
The drama all started in February of 2022. As many of her fellow WNBA players do, Griner was visiting Russia to play basketball in the offseason. She realized the cartridges were in her bag when she attempted to go through a security checkpoint with her luggage. This was obviously a grave mistake. She was swiftly detained and quickly became a political football in the United States. She languished away in the work camp for nearly a year before being exchanged for the “Merchant of Death” Viktor Bout.
In an exclusive interview with Robin Roberts of ABC News, she reveals what she experienced in the Russian Federation.
