California has expanded access to Medi-Cal to illegal immigrants, allowing them access to free and low-cost healthcare. This rule went into effect on January 1st of this year. California is the first state in the nation to offer such a thing, and, of course, there are a ton of supporters and critics. Some say that this is an excellent thing because someone’s immigration status should not prevent them from having access to healthcare. Others say that this is a slap in the face to legal immigrants who did everything by the book, only to have people who circumvented the process get rewarded for breaking the law.
Proponents of the new rule allowing illegal immigrants access to Medi-Cal insurance speak about life-saving medical procedures that some people require. What these people don’t talk about are the procedures that are more cosmetic than anything else, such as sex changes. In theory, an illegal alien on Medi-Cal would have access to free and/or low-cost gender-affirming procedures. This includes things like sex changes.
