The Democratic House Rep from New York, Jamaal Bowman, lost his primary election by about 13,000 votes. The challenger, executive George Lattimer, received over 58% of the vote, while Bowman reached just over 41%. This is considered an upset victory due to how well-known and affiliated Bowman is. The pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC contributed $14 million to this race, making it one of the most expensive of its kind in United States history.
Bowman is, of course, a satellite member of “the Squad, ” including fellow NY House Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), Ilhan Omar, Pramila Jayapal, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib. The Squad is a group of far-left House Reps who support each other and certain initiatives. The most recent thing this group supported was anti-Israel and pro-ceasefire efforts. Certain people frown upon such a thing, which may have hurt Bowman in this race.
There is also the issue of the fire alarm incident on Capitol Hill. When the House was in session to vote on a bill, Bowman decided to pull a fire alarm to delay the proceedings. The building was evacuated, and the House took at least another hour to reconvene. Committing such an action is illegal, and Bowman could have faced jail time, but he got off with a slap on the wrist… even after initially lying about pulling the fire alarm.
