The Democratic Senator from New Jersey, Bob Menendez, has been convicted of 16 counts related to a federal bribery case. Menendez was previously charged for similar crimes in 2017, but he ultimately won that case. No such luck this time, as he faces prison upon sentencing after a clear and concise conviction. His wife was also facing charges for her role in the scam that produced gold bars, cash, and other things, such as jewelry, in exchange for political favors. The case against her won’t result in prison time due to her cancer diagnosis.
Bob, however, is facing prison time. He is also running for re-election, and the election is in November of this year. It is unclear if he will be removed from office before the election or if there is a challenger who could defeat him in the general. If a Republican defeats Menendez in November, then that could shift the balance of power in the Senate. 51 Senators from one party, or who caucus with one another, represent a majority. There are currently 49 Republican Senators.
